Hiring a finance professional
How much does Gravitate charge to recruit a finance role?
Fees are agreed per role. They depend on which exclusive option suits the hire: Platinum Search for critical or hard-to-fill leadership roles, Gold Search for priority hires, or Silver Search for straightforward roles with no upfront fee. Any engagement fee is deducted from the final fee. Book a call and we'll share our terms.
How long does it take to hire a Financial Controller or Finance Director in the South West?
We run a structured two-stage interview process that targets shortlist to offer within two weeks. Sourcing and screening happen before the shortlist, and the timeline relies on prompt interview slots and decisions on your side. The start date then depends on the candidate's notice period, which is often longer for senior roles such as Financial Controllers and Finance Directors, so plan for that when you set the hiring timeline.
Do you work on contingency or retained terms?
Both, and always exclusively. Platinum Search is retained, for critical leadership hires, with an engagement fee deducted from the final fee. Gold Search is a hybrid with a small engagement fee, also deducted, for priority hires. Silver Search is contingent with no upfront fee, for straightforward roles. We'll recommend one on a 30-minute call.
Do you offer a guarantee or replacement period?
Yes. Every hire is covered by a free replacement period: 20 weeks on Platinum and Gold Search, and 10 weeks on Silver Search. If your new hire leaves within that time, we find a replacement at no extra fee. We don't offer cash refunds.
How do you handle counter-offers?
In our own offers over the last 12 months, about 1 in 3 met a counter-offer. We ask every candidate the counter-offer question at screening, flag the risk on the shortlist, shape the offer around what they told us they want, and prepare them for resignation day. It doesn't remove the risk; it reduces it.
What is the Gravitate Baseline?
The Gravitate Baseline is our quality standard: five equally weighted criteria we assess every candidate against before introducing them: proactivity, accountability, commitment to the role, communication and technical background. We score each criterion 1 to 5 when we screen, and you receive the scores with written notes. It keeps shortlists consistent, so you can compare candidates like with like.
What is your 7-step methodology?
Our seven steps are: pre-hire discovery and strategy briefing; pre-hire preparation and EVP; research and market mapping; outreach; shortlist presentation of three or four candidates; offer management; and onboarding. The same repeatable process runs on every finance hire, managed by one specialist from brief to start date.
Which areas of the South West do you cover?
We're based in Exeter and recruit across Devon, Cornwall, Somerset, Dorset, Wiltshire, Gloucestershire and Bath. That's our specialist focus, and we also recruit finance roles anywhere in the UK, so get in touch wherever you're based. We don't actively cover Bristol. Most roles are on-site or hybrid, so we focus on candidates who can realistically commute to your offices.
Which sectors do you specialise in?
We specialise in finance roles for FMCG, food and drink, retail and hospitality, and manufacturing and engineering businesses across the South West. We also recruit finance roles in other sectors, including logistics and professional services, so get in touch whatever your industry.
Can you provide interim finance cover?
We recruit permanent and fixed-term contract (FTC) finance roles only, for example project work or parental leave cover. We don't place day-rate interim contractors, but an FTC is often the right way to cover a gap.
What finance roles do you recruit?
We recruit permanent finance roles from Management Accountant and Financial Accountant through Finance Manager, Finance Business Partner, FP&A Manager, Financial Controller and Head of Finance to Finance Director. We recruit permanent and fixed-term contract (FTC) roles only, such as project or parental leave cover; we don't place day-rate interim roles.
What kind of recruitment business is Gravitate?
Gravitate is a specialist finance recruitment consultancy. Rather than sending volumes of CVs, we run a structured process: a detailed brief, market mapping, a shortlist of three or four assessed candidates, and support through offer, counter-offer and onboarding.
For finance professionals
How does working with Gravitate work for candidates?
Send your CV or book a call. We'll talk about what you want next, what you're worth in the South West market, and which roles fit. We only put you forward with your agreement, give feedback after every stage, and support you through offer and resignation. We reply to every application within two working days.
Will my CV be kept confidential?
Yes. Your CV only goes to an employer after we've discussed the specific role and you've agreed. We never send speculative CVs without your permission, and we handle your data in line with our privacy policy and UK GDPR.
Do you recruit interim or contract finance roles?
We recruit permanent and fixed-term contract (FTC) finance roles only, such as project work or parental leave cover. We don't place day-rate interim roles. If you're open to an FTC, tell us when you register your CV.
Should I accept a counter-offer?
It depends on why you started looking. If the counter-offer fixes the real reason, staying can be right. If it's only more money and the original issues remain, think carefully. Our guide on counter-offers covers five questions to ask before you decide.
Do you charge candidates?
No. Candidates never pay us anything. Our fees are paid by employers; on Platinum and Gold Search that includes an engagement fee at the start, which is deducted from the final fee.
